Community

I've taken a break from Korean dramas and started watching Leverage again. Then I remembered how great  American shows are and started watching Parks and Recreation. Then came the ultimate discovery from the AV Club website: Community.

Starring Joel Mchale as Jeff Winger, Community is a show about a gang of misfits whose misfortunes have led them to the less than glamorous world of Greendale Community College. In the pilot episode, Jeff falls in lust with Britta and makes up a Spanish group to trick her into going out with him, but some students actually show up. Here is the Spanish study group of Greendale:

Jeff Winger:
A Lawyer who lied about his credentials and goes back to community college to get the college degree he lied about having. Apparently he got his degree from Colombia, not Columbia.

Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs)
She's blonde and a certified tree hugger. Translation: she's dumb and incessantly righteous.

Troy Barnes (Donald Glover):
He was the star football player in high school with a full scholarship to college, but lost it when he got injured doing a keg stand. Also, he couldn't stand the pressure of playing for money and fame. He becomes best friends with Abed.

Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi)
He is the weirdest one out of the group, but he's also the smartest. He is obsessed with television and treats the group as characters in some movie or other. Jeff thinks he has Asperger's. He probably does.

Annie Edison (Allison Brie)
Nicknamed "Annie Adderall", Annie is academically smart. She got addicted to pills in high school after being told they would help her pass. After a nervous break down, she had to go to rehab and ended up at Greendale. In the beginning she has a crush on Troy, but then she wants Jeff because she secretly wants to "tame" him. Annie went to the same high school as Troy.

Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown)
She is a recent divorcee who is going back to community college to study business in order to open up her own shop one day. She likes to bake and loves making people feel guilty. She is also the religious one in the group.

Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase)
Pierce is just old and has been attending Greendale for 7 years. He is rich, obnoxious and racist.

To say the least, I love this show. It is not only hilarious with Pierce's racist jokes and Jeff's witty retorts, but it is also very creative. In the episode "Digital Estate Planning" of season 3, the gang plays a video game with characters made in their likeness in order to win Pierce's inheritance. The little players accidentally kill each other, while Abed makes an empire with his virtual wife. This is just one of the many hilarious episodes in this unique show.

Another reason why I love this show is Jim Rash, who plays the cross dressing dean of Greendale, Craig Pelton. Not to mention Senor Chang (Ken Jeong), who you may remember as the crazy Asian guy in Hangover.

One of the ridiculous get ups he shows up in

Usually, when so many comedians are put together, the show can become utter crap, but Community works like no other show. Yet, it has one major flaw. It's Friends all over again. Remember how Rachel used to sleep with every guy in the group? Well in this show everyone sleeps with everyone, except for Pierce and Shirley of course. Jeff sleeps with Britta, then he kisses Annie. Annie likes Troy, but then goes out with Vaughn, who used to date Britta. Troy then starts dating Britta.

To be fair, Jeff had a perfectly good reason to kiss 18 year-old Annie. He tells Shirley, "Well, Shirley, since you've clearly failed to grasp the central insipid metaphor of those Twilight books you devour, let me explain it to you: Men are monsters who crave young flesh. The end." After I picked myself off of the floor, I realized this show is it for me. Joel Mchale can do no wrong. He is hilarious, witty and unfortunately, happily married. But, you know...he's HAWWT.
